Bedding Down in North Hatley
Dances and dance
classes run late so you might want to stay over, like we did, in a B&B. We
personally recommend these four-star establishments:
Le Cachet
True
to its name, this beautifully restored century-old home has a great deal
of cachet. Tucked up the hill behind the Catholic Church, this B&B has
four comfortable, charmingly appointed rooms, each with private bath.
Pampering includes a tray of coffee and fruit juices at your door at 8
a.m., followed by a refined continental breakfast in the dining room of
fruits, cheeses, pâtés, croissants and breads. The location is picturesqu e
and quiet, yet just a short stroll from the famous gazebo on Lake Massawippi and the attractions of central North Hatley, with its
restaurants,
antique shops and art galleries. Your congenial host, Marcel Brassard, is
a local businessman and entrepreneur with lots of entertaining stories to
tell.

La Cornemeuse
Cornemeuse
means “bagpipe” in French, and this prize-winning establishment has
tastefully pursued a Scottish theme throughout the elegantly renovated
27-room mansion, originally owned by a Scottish family. It has five pretty
guest rooms, each with private bath and a Scottish name. Owner Diane
Brisson and her daughters meet groups at the door attired in early-20th
century costume, and serve authentic 4 o’clock teas, on fine china, in the
drawing room. The ambiance and period furnishings recreate the early
1900s, when the pace was slower and more relaxed. Breakfast, in the large
panelled dining room, is a three-course gourmet feast, with a choice of a
savoury or sweet main course, served by uniformed waitresses sporting
tartan neck scarves. In fine weather, you can breakfast at dainty
wrought-iron tables on the back terrace overlooking the herb garden and
neighbouring golf course. Should guests ever tire of relaxing in the
comfortable parlours and drawing room, they are only a 10-minute walk from
Lake Massawippi and the centre of North Hatley.
